Physical Education Overview

​Health and Physical Education

Here at The Gap State School (TGSS) we are introducing and reporting against elements of Health and Physical Education National Curriculum with a primary focus on scaffolding in​dividual development and participation. 

All students participate in weekly lessons with our specialist Physical Education Teacher. Prep–Year 3 x 60minutes/Year 4-6 30minutes. These lessons provide our students with the foundation for lifelong skills and participation in physical activity.

Our PE Year overview at a glance

Term 1

  • ​Swimming​ strokes – (Year 4-6 Weeks 1-6 / Prep–Year 3 weeks 1-10).
  • Students will participate in an intensive swimming block with a focus on stroke ​development and dive entries.
  • Swim-a-thon Year 4-6 Week 6 
  • Year 4-6 will commence Athletics Unit week 6.
  • Friday afternoon sport – commences week 5. 
  • Week 10 Cross Country Year 4-6 @ GPS Ashgrove Wednesday 1 April.

Term 2 

  • Prep–Year 3 commence Track and Field - Students develop fundamental movements for running, jumping and throwing. 
  • Students will learn the correct technique for sprinting, long jump, high jump, shot-put​ and relays. 
  • Year 4-6 Inter-house Athletics Carnival 26 April 800m/200m events.
  • 2 May Year 4-6 Inter-house Carnival Day.
  • Year 1-3 Cross Country 23 May @ TGSS.
  • Prep Athletics Carnival 26 June. 
  • Year 1-3 Athletics Carnival 27 June.
  • Friday afternoon sport. 

Term 3 

  • Modified ball sports.
  • Student will develop, refine, sequence and co-ordinate sport specific fundamental movement skills required for participating in various modified ball sports.
  • PE Celebration of Learning - Inter-h​ouse Ball Games Carnival.
  • Year 6 Volleyball Spikezone.
  • Friday afternoon sport. 

Term 4 

  • Swimming - with a focus on Water Safety and Survival Swimming. 
  • Students participate in the 'Royal Lifesaving Love To Swim Program'.
  • PE Celebration of Learning - Inter-house Swimming Carnival (Prep–Year 6).
  • Friday afternoon sport .

Sporting opportunities​

At TGSS we have a long standing tradition in promoting and supporting students through sport. Emphasis is placed on participation, co-operation, teamwork and team spirit. The school’s sporting programs provide a valuable opportunity in developing positive relationships between students, staff, families and the wider community. All Students in Years 4-6 students participate in the North West District Interschool and TGSS Intra-school Sports Program. Representative opportunities are available for students who excel in various sporting areas as individuals and as part of a team.
